Who is Joyce?
Joyce is a quilter from Australia. She has been quilting for about 30 years and her mother encouraged and taught sewing techniques from an early age. She began seriously sewing at 18 when she began her teacher training. She still has her first sewing machine, a Singer but is currently using a Bernina Artista 180.
She started quilting because she loves fabric. She was a Textiles teacher and wanted to add this skill to her teaching repertoire and into introduce it into the curriculum. She had done a little herself and then she took a Sampler Quilt class in Ballarat with Lorna McNeill, and then moved on from there. From this ten week class, she mainly worked by herself, expanding her skills as time permitted. She has attended the Wangaratta Quilters Dookie weekends for a number of years.
She has made about 12 full-sized quilts, some wall quilts, many cot quilts and other bits and pieces. As a teacher she has taught Textiles at a secondary school level, including patchwork. She also taught Art and Design and Woodwork. One of her biggest projects as a teacher, she designed and supervised the student construction of four large house banners for Loreto College, Ballarat.
She is now retired and is slowly filling her home, that she shares with her husband of 38 years, with fabric from all over the world as well as textile art including quilts.
